Beans

Most commonly, beans are canned or dried. Dried beans need to be soaked for 8-12 hours and then cooked slowly until tender, about 2 hours. Beans have a neutral flavor and have a creamy texture. So they are good in spicy dishes and burritos! Mashed beans also make good dips and spreads, they can thicken soups.

Salsa

Salsa is a mixture of chopped veggies or fruits, and is used as a condiment. Salsa can trick your senses: mango, onion, and hot peppers are sweet and spicy, and salsa made with tomatoes and chili peppers is salty, zesty, and spicy. In the summer months when tomatoes are growing, it is really fun to make your own salsa. (link to webisode of making salsa with the kids)

Cheese

Oozy, gooey, creamy, cheese! Eaten alone, cheese satisfies chewy salty cravings. Cooked and melted, cheese makes food taste creamy and rich.

Chili Powder

Chili powder is a mixture of dried peppers, cumin, and other spices. It can be spicy or mild. Chili powder is popular in chili, burritos, and other foods with a Mexican flair. Taster’s Challenge: Try chili powder on mango.

Adobe Sauce

Adobe sauce is spicy, zesty, and smoky. It is a tomato based sauce with spicy and tangy flavors. It is packed with smoke jalepeno peppers.

Lime

Limes are sour, there’s no denying it. The sour flavor of lime brings more flavor to foods like beans, fish, chicken, dressing.

Taster’s Challenge:

Cilantro

Cilantro can be kinda bitter and kinda our all by itself. But chopped up and put into sauces, eggs, dressing, it adds zesty zip to dishes. Taster’s Challenge: Add chopped cilantro to scrambled eggs.

Whole Wheat Tortilla Shells

Tortilla shells have a pretty neutral flavor, and have a chewy texture. They hold food well and are chewy, which is why they are great for burritos and quesadillas. Transform them into crunchy salty, if baked in the oven, and even crunchy sweet baked and topped with cinnamon sugar.
